Why Every Muslim Needs
a Janazah Kit
It is not uncommon to find a deceased Muslim who did not prepare (in advance) for life's greatest inevitability --death. Sadly, cremation and other non-Islamic ways are often the outcome of such cases. In other instances, precious time that might otherwise be spent praying for the soul of the deceased is exhausted running about gathering burial supplies and making final arrangements.
In fact, each and every Muslim is obligated to plan for this eventuality. There are even Hadith that speak to the virtues of contemplating one's own eventual end. Good advance planning should include talking with family members (both Muslim and non-Muslim) about your specific burial wishes and Islamic burial rites. It is highly advisable to do this before you become seriously ill and find yourself within close proximity of death.
Below is a short list of suggested concerns to discuss with loved ones:
1. Which Masjid should be contacted upon your demise?
2. List the names of those who've agreed to prepare your body for Janazah.
3. Where can your Janazah kit be found?
4. Explain the fact that a deceased Muslim is not to be subjected to autopsy or cremation.
Also, no thorough planning is complete without drafting a "will" (or living trust) and advance medical directives.
Narrated Abdullah bin Umar:
Allah's Apostle said, "It is not permissible for any Muslim who has something to will to stay for two nights without having his last will and testament written and kept ready with him." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 51, Number 1)
Our new venture -- "Original Janazah Kits" was conceived with the idea of taking some of the stress out of preparing the Muslim deceased for burial.
